It's houseful in old-age homes

Twenty years ago, Violet and her husband Alfred Jackson moved into the Home for the Aged, run by the Little Sisters of the Poor on Hosur Road. They came here as they didn't want to burden their married daughter, who lives in Kochi. Today Violet is 80, Alfred is dead but she doesn't feel alone or unsafe here. As families shrink, support systems vanish and children get busy in careers in faraway lands, seniors are flocking to old-age homes.

Home for the elderly, hope for the lonely

With Shaji Philip leading the way through Advantage Elder Care, a home for rehabilitation and palliative care, the lives of the 30 other patients at the centre slowly come to light. Many of the people here are affected by dementia, crippling arthritis, cancer, paraplegia, Parkinson’s disease and even muscular dystrophy, a rare group of muscle diseases that weakens the musculoskeletal system and can bring all locomotion to a complete halt.

Centenarian celebrates birthday at old age home

One dreads the inevitable wrinkles and false teeth, but this birthday boy just celebrated his 104th with cake and balloons. Clad in Mysuru silk, Sundararaman V was the star of the show on Tuesday, as not only did he fight back after a recent ailment, his caretakers say he is quite the positive force in the facility. The celebrations were held at Advantage Elder Care, an old age home in Hennur.

“Largely, this attitude can be attributed to their hectic lifestyle,” explains Shaji Philip, from Advantage Elder Care, a home for senior citizens. “It was much easier to take care of the elderly in a joint-family set-up. As it is, most couples these days are working and don’t want to leave their parents alone at home due to safety concerns. It’s even more difficult for those who have to travel for extended periods of time,” he adds.
